Final Major Project

As many of you know, team CatBarrel; aka Louise, Martin and myself have just been to Turkey to get the ball rolling for our final major project.

For those of you who arent aware; our project brief is as follows:

To recreate an area of Marmaris, Turkey, to a real and correct visual 3D representation.

We are following the style of a racing game such as PGR4 or GT5. Th

is means that during the building process of our level, we have to consider both

the academic side and whats good enough in that respect,m but also follow guidelines for how racing games are actually made.

After GameCity, we have been in contact with one of the environment artists at Bizarre Creations and he has give us a few pointers about making racing games and how they deal with it.

Whilst we were in turkey, we took over 1000 pictures of various apartment buildings, textures and street furniture assets.

During the trip, as i took my laptop with us, we started doing some 3D work. Using the pictures we have and the streets and buildings we have seen, we decided on a street to build and made a blackout of the track we would build.

We discussed and considered the layout, what would be place

s where and how we were going to go about modelling the buildings themselves. Separately, with approval of the other team members, each one of us built a different apartment block whilst we were there. That way we could tell and overcome and problems we would have.

Here is the model i did:

Its 760 Tri's and uses one 1024 x 1024 texture page. It wouldnt necessarily be seen from all 4 sides as no builkding can within our game. For academic and portfolio purposes i built all 4 sides. I did this in under 4 hours, including texturing.

For the actual game the building would ahve shops underneath, but we havent concentrated on that at this partticular time.

I loved being in Turkey and the architecture which it has. A mixture of modern and retro buildings bring a nice feel to the area.

Im looking forward to steaming forward and getting this project really underway.

Oh, also, We managed to get a cat in a barrel!!!

sounds awesome.
hope it goes well.

try to take screenshots of your model in 'perspective' instead of 'user' or 'orthographic'.

its un-aesthetically pleasing because the human eye never really sees anything like that unless its a million miles away.
